Description
Henna body art is a temporary form of body decoration that uses a reddish dye from the henna plant. It’s also known as mehndi or mehandi.
How it works
Henna paste is made from powdered henna leaves.
The paste is applied to the skin using a cone, brush, or stick.
The paste dries and cracks after 15–20 minutes.
The area is wrapped to lock in heat and intensify the color.
The design darkens over 24–72 hours.
The design lasts 1–3 weeks, depending on the skin type and where it’s applied.
History and uses
Henna has been used for over 5,000 years in India, Pakistan, Africa, and the Middle East.
It was originally used for cooling properties and medicinal purposes.
Today, it’s used for special occasions like weddings and birthdays.
In some cultures, darker henna stains symbolize deeper love.
Safety and considerations
Henna tattoos are relatively safe and painless.
However, some chemicals added to henna can cause allergic reactions.
The pigment is not approved by the FDA for use on the skin.
